Just because a painting makes you feel happy doesn’t mean it was enjoyable to make. What’s fun for me is rising above of all my emotions (including joy) and completely devoting myself to the process. It’s not a great idea to laugh your way through a painting, and it wouldn’t necessarily lead to a cheerful painting anyway. There’s a deeper kind of joy that you should strive for when you create. This is sort of an extreme example, but take “Guernica.” I think Picasso had fun painting it.
