July 4

I played in a volleyball tournament in middle school. Our team chased after the ball court with youthful vigor but couldn’t win a game. A kid in the stands, “K,” kept yelling out “Dosukoi! Dosukoi!” which was weird because that’s what you’d say at a sumo match. Someone asked K “Why do you keep saying dosukoi?” during a timeout. “Huh? Leave me alone,” K responded. “Uh, did you mean donmai, that we shouldn’t worry about messing up?” We rolled around on the floor in a fit of laughter, volleyball the furthest thing from our minds.
