I asked my mother:
“Does everyone eventually die?”
She said that, no, they don’t die. I tried so hard to believe it despite not having the tiniest sliver of real hope. But she had so clearly, so decisively, said: “Nobody dies. I won’t die, and you won’t die.”
I desperately tried to make myself believe it all the way through 3rd grade.

あるとき、うちの母親に訊いたことがあるんですよ。
「人間はいつか死ぬんでしょ？」って。そしたら、「死なない」って言ったんですよ。なんか、ほんと、一縷の望みじゃないけど、それを信じようとしてましたね。「誰も死なない。お母さんも死なないし、おまえも死なない」ってきっぱり言いましたから。
それを必死に小学校３年生ぐらいまで信じようとしていた。
